THE Justin & MARY

The Foundations Edition

Ready to separate yourself from the pack, and learn the trade-secrets of mastering light, no matter the situation?

Hey, Fellow Wedding & Portrait Photographers:

Gear and Lightroom tweaks can only take you so far: there’s just no substitute for studying your craft and learning to harness light and flash.

And we’re drawing back the curtain on exactly how we do it.

You dread pulling out your flash: it’s huge, clunky, and cumbersome – and besides, only leads to stark, unnatural lighting that’s the opposite of your natural, editorial style.

You’ve slapped on a bounce flash, then paid for it in hours staring at a computer screen saddled up with a glass of wine and a too-long night

You’ve shelled out money on gear, but still can’t find the right settings to play well with flash – it’s stressful and always looks overexposed.

You’ve ever felt like a fraud charging clients and delivering what you believe to be sub-par work.

You’re sick of inconsistent results, because you can’t dial in your flash quickly enough upon walking into a room.

You’re in just the right place.

The J&M Lighting Course is a life time access, 6 week course in lighting for photographers that teaches exactly how to capture every part of a wedding day. We put a decade’s worth of experience into nearly 50 modules designed to give you all you need to love your flash!

You’ll walk away from The J&M Lighting Course with:

Confidence knowing you can create consistent results no matter the light.

Knowledge on how to step away from safe, pretty-but-boring images, and create iconic art that’s publication-ready.

Expert-training on every moment of the wedding day start to finish, so you never miss moments again.

Pricing you can be proud of, because you never have to worry that you could have served your clients better if only you’d done a better job with the lighting.

Assurance in your “why,” because you can confidently deliver on telling the whole day’s story for your client.

Behind the scenes

Take a Look

“I walked into a stunning getting-ready room with ugly orange lights yesterday. Before learning from Justin & Mary, I would have panicked. I’d have spent COUNTLESS hours trying to edit out the orange and fix the colors! I would have stressed for the rest of the day -- who knows how that would have affected the rest of their pictures!

Thanks to Justin & Mary, I walked into the room, smiled, and pulled out my one-light set-up. I was actually HAPPY that the lighting was bad so I got the chance to use my flash. I can’t believe I just said that! I felt confident and on top of the world!”

From Chelsea Schaefer

“I walked into the J&M Lighting Workshop with lighting at ‘a third grade level.’ We’ve all been there: crank that ISO way up, slap a preset on that bad boy, and call it a day. I was cheating not only myself, but my clients out of beautiful, consistent, emotion-driven, heirloom-quality images that we both deserved.

This workshop gave me the extensive, hands-on experience I desperately needed. I no longer feel held back or afraid of an unfamiliar lighting scenario. I can ABSOLUTELY do it! I can tackle any lighting situation, from complete darkness, to shooting in high-noon, to unattractive, color-casted daylight. I cannot thank you enough!”

From Soleil Hagan:

“I am no longer afraid of the light, and have even embraced it thanks to Justin & Mary: it has transformed my view of artificial light!

I actually look forward to weddings, and almost even hope for the challenge of dark getting-ready room, or a difficult reception, because I am able to put my knowledge into action!”

From Maggie Trice:

“Because of this course, I stand behind my prices, fully confident in my work. I just delivered a gallery that included ceremony images from a very dark, circa 1800s church with stained glass windows. My bride called me, elated, saying ‘this is beauty that I didn’t even know could exist. Your images are full of light and joy!’ The dark ceiling? No problem. The red, green, and blue glass? Not a problem. I was able to craft the focus of the image to the beauty of their emotion -- instead of the red-tint of their high-end venue. I now know what to do! I control the light and I create the beauty and that is worth my couples’ investments. I now know I am worth it because I will always deliver gorgeous images no matter the shade of tungsten or the gloom of storm clouds!”

From Lindsay Fauver

“Before the course, I had the lighting equipment. I had the ambition to rock the socks off of lighting. And even if I had my sights set on awesomeness for each wedding I shot, I’d fall short, over and over again.

This intensive gave me ACTUAL knowledge (because just my desire to make everything work simply wasn’t enough!): just technical enough to challenge me, but completely and totally accessible. It was a complete game-changer!”

From Christa Bosse

“When I got to the venue last Saturday, the lighting situation was even worse than I’d imagined. I really don’t want to even imagine how bad my photos would have turned out if I’d not taken a workshop from Justin and Mary!

I got everything I needed for the one-light set-up, and it was magical! I’m thrilled with how the photos turned out!”

From Elisabeth Carol

We’re with ya -- our job as photographers is put the focus on people in our images, and not on us, right? C’mon. No one is born knowing this stuff, so let us show you how we cracked the code and learned to look at flash.

Get the exact process we went through for getting over our crippling fear of (or was it hatred of?) flash -- and the mindset we put into place to make flash work for us

A New Way of Thinking About Flash

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

Week One

*The Entirely Different Way of Looking at Flash (+ Why It Changes Everything)

Get the exact process we went through for getting over our crippling fear of (or was it hatred of?) flash - and the mindset we put into place to make flash work for us.

*A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Wedding Day Goals

Grab the key, step-by-step components of light that go into creating authentic images that tell stories that matter.

*12 Characteristics of Light, Part 1: Intensity and Directional Light (+ How to Leverage 90-120 Degree Positioning)

Learn our fast, simple approach to lighting that creates timeless images for generations to come, including our “Two Imaginary Strings” method.

*12 Characteristics of Light, Part 2: Contrast, Relative Size, and Color

Next, master the rest of the light characteristics -- learning these helped put our business in demand and build a waitlist of clients.

If week two were a movie, we’re thinking it’s got James Bond edge: sure, spy toys would be fun, but what really gets us going are flash and camera setting hacks, off-camera set-up tricks, grip equipment tips, the two modifiers every wedding photographer should have, and more.

Because you shouldn’t have to worry about obtrusive, lengthy set-up ever again.

Demystified: The Secrets of Knowing Your Gear & Using as Little as Possible

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

Week Two

*You & Your Flash: Settings, Manual, TLL, & Beyond.

It’s not nearly as complicated as you think, and we want to show you how to dial in faster, so you can walk into any room and assess the flash power you need.

*The 30-Second One-Light Set Up

You’ll learn everything you need to know about using the least equipment for the best results, the gear we recommend, and the two modifiers you need most -- oh, and Justin showcases his ninja moves with a quick set up demo.

*How We Bounce (and Why We Don’t Bounce Most of the Time)

Yup, we only bounce about 5-10% of the whole day … and even then usually in conjunction with OCF. We’ll teach you the skills you need to know so you can, too.

Master dealing with ugly, nasty mixed light, once and for all -- so you can make just about any flash look like naturally-sourced, good ol’ window light. We call week 3 the “WHAT? I can’t believe that’s one of MY pictures and I actually took it” week -- and it’s kinda our favorite!

How to Make Your Flash Feel Natural When You’re In Bad Light

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

Week Three

*Why Every Photographer Needs to Know How to Get Rid of Ambient Light

Don’t be skippin’ out on this lesson because you can just haul the details outside and shoot them -- this module is a game-changer with trade secrets!

*The Iconic Bridal Portrait & Bridal Details

All the essential ways to use flash with people, including 3 different types of 35-120 degree angles.

*Exactly How to Make Your Flash Feel More Natural

Where do we place the light when they’re getting ready? Should you move the light source? Game on: this module answers all that and then some.

We see you. We know you’ve practiced by yourself (‘cause we did, too). Learn how to break out your flash — and even assemble an entire one-light set-up in some of the most hectic, time-crunched, high-pressure, or need to be unobtrusive parts of the wedding day— so you never miss those once-in-a-lifetime moments again.

Power Up Your Light Placements

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

Week Four

*Inside Look at Shooting the Ceremony

Let’s get REAL about putting all this know-how to work during the most challenging, fast-paced parts of the day: learn how to draw your angles, and where we place our light.

*How to Really Photograph the Family

It’s one of the most emotional days of their life: so how exactly do we crank through them in 15 minutes or less, AND maintain consistent results without touching the power on our flash? We’ll spill our secrets here.

*3 Steps to Getting Your Settings & The Advanced Ceremony

During a ceremony, you don’t want to bounce -- your bounce flash may misfire, overheat, and take too long to recycle. Get our 3-step skillset to working around one light from processional to recessional.

Aww yeah -- you’re dialing in your settings and drawing angles like a flash-master! But we don’t want you to freeze when it’s go-time: quit trading a few minutes of the wedding day for a bounce flash and Lightroom prayer … we’ll show you how to rock your flash on fly.

How to Get Your Settings Fast in Crunch Time

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

Week Five

*3 Quick and Simple Tips for Harsh Light

It’s possible to get soft, bright light without a flash, and we’ll teach you our step-by-step way to nab it here.

*The Complete Reception Detail Guide

Get our game plan for shooting quickly WITH a light, whipping out the soft box vs. umbrella, and dealing with those candles or twinkle lights.

*How to Nail the Night Shot

Crack the code on where to place or carry the light, our go-to settings, how to keep ambient light, and why we use a softbox outdoors, and umbrella indoors -- plus, how to make rain and snow shots a walk in the park.

AKA The Reception... So many things could go awry: the couple sashays away from your light, the best man stands up for his toast in the most awfully-lit spot in the whole room, and you’re running around it all with high-dollar equipment. Wait -- oh, and now the DJ turned all the lights down. How do you finish strong? We’ll show ya.

How to Get Consistent Results When the Subject and Light are Changing Like Crazy

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

Week Six

*How to Become a Reception Image Master, Pt. 1

From first dance and toasts, we’ll talk through being black boxed and working around your flash with throngs of people moving around.

*Super-Charge Your Second Flash

Let’s talk gear -- triggers, stands, syncing, and flash for pass through TLL, learn the inside scoop on what modifiers to use.

*How to Become a Reception Image Master, Pt. 2

Now, you’ve gotta nail all those shots with CONSISTENCY. We’ll tell you how we fix inconsistencies and how to gel the flash.

*Be a Lights Out Boss

But back to that DJ -- why’d he have to go and turn out the lights? That’s ok. You’ll learn how to focus and shoot reception moments,  the lights go dark and your camera wants to quit!”

*From Just Getting By to Becoming An Artist

Quit safe, boring photography, and stand out in a saturated market by creating true art. We believe you should tell stories that are iconic for generations, and you’ll walk away knowing there’s not a single situation you can’t handle.

Oh yes. But wait, there actually is much more... When you register for the Complete Course Option You'll Also Get:

ONCE YOU're in, here's what you'll learn:

We are Justin & Mary Marantz, a husband and wife photography duo who believes in love, quietly and fearlessly without question. We’ve been featured in publications spanning Martha Stewart and Style Me Pretty, globe-trotted as workshop hosts and conference keynote speakers, but it’s our heart to bring it home and teach our tribe what we’ve learned about our craft.

Behind the Course

We totally feel you! When we were first starting out we didn’t have a ton of lighting equipment either, and we just wanted something that would give us the BEST results for the least amount of gear! That’s why everything we teach can be achieved with a simple speed light off camera set up! You’ll probably want to invest in an umbrella & soft box at some point (don’t worry, one of our bonuses that you’ll get when the course starts will be a buying guide if you want suggestions!) But really you won’t need much more than what you probably already have!

Q: I don’t own a ton of off camera flash gear (and honestly, it intimidates the heck out of me!) What will I need to invest in, in order to be successful in this course?

Next Question

YES! In a lot of ways, it can be even better that way because you won’t have to unlearn things that have been hurting your flash results! Over the years Justin & I have had SO many people come through our lighting workshops who had NEVER used flash before (like seriously took it out of the plastic that day!) and it’s been game-changing for them. The way that we teach light is that we lay a solid foundation of everything you need to know about light and then we build from there! So the newest of people don’t get left behind, and the more experienced photographers are challenged along the way!

Q: Will this course be right for me if I haven't had a lot of experience using flash with my photography? I want to make sure I am not diving in and getting over my head!

Next Question

The first thing that will happen is that you will fall in love with light and your craft and the Why that you want your business, work and life to stand for in a way that you probably haven’t in a while. Justin and I have a deep reverence for photography. Like we always say, “Life goes along and this moment is gone and that moment is gone. But photography steps in and says ‘not this one.’ This moment stays.” Beyond that, you just won’t FEAR your flash anymore. You really won’t! There’s no other way to put it. And what we’ve heard from past students is that they actually find themselves almost looking FORWARD to tough lighting situations so they can put this new knowledge and power to work! You can also expect to get your images right IN CAMERA a lot more which will help get you your LIFE back, and to have more confidence than you’ve ever had that you are delivering something to your clients worth INVESTING in. Most of all, you won’t ever have to walk into a wedding again in full on panic mode because of dark venues or bad weather. You can rest easy knowing that no matter what happens, you can deliver. Why? Because WE BRING THE LIGHT!!

Q: What can I expect to leave this course with? How will learning your material change my business?

Next Question

A. Absolutely not, we built this course so that you can go at your own pace the whole way through. We want you to be successful and realize that every person will work through the content differently. The best news is, you can watch it as many times as it takes for you to become an expert in lighting! Take your time, jump in when it works, and know the content is waiting for you in the members area! That's why we give you both instant & LIFETIME access!

 Q. I'm worried about buying a course right NOW! What if I don't have time to start right away? Will this hurt me?

Next Question

A: The J+M Lighting Course is a video course, so we will be walking you through step by step with videos and cheat sheets! You’ll get to see the exact systems we use and get to watch us while we set up, shoot, and light our way to incredible images. The best part? You can be doing it too while watching!

Q: How is the content delivered in the J+M Lighting Course? I love hands on but I also realize that I will want to be practicing on my own gear while I am watching the modules!
